For several years now, Suzume has lived and worked as a maid in London; after a long time away, she has finally received permission to visit her family in Japan.
But upon her arrival, an inner voice tells her she ought to call home. Her employer is fine, but he informs her that while they were attempting to build a swimming pool on an upper floor, the entire structure collapsed—and now they must rebuild the house.
Suzume is taken aback, but she is even more astonished when she is asked to spend the coming year in Japan while things return to normal.
From that moment on, she attempts to adapt to life in a small apartment, all while using her trusty guidebook to rediscover the flavors of her homeland.
Never without her uniform, she can be seen walking the streets in search of delicious bites; in this way, she samples the “wild” version of taiyaki—a treat made all the more delicious by its individual preparation.
Later, she spends a day shopping with her grandmother, where she discovers takoyaki, with its rich octopus filling. And she also tries the flammkuchen with her estranged neighbor.
The days pass, and for the time being, Suzume has no time to be bored; the cherry blossom season is in full swing, and according to her guidebook, it is the perfect moment to try dango—a sweet, sticky treat that can prove quite a challenge to eat.
