A young boy wakes up one morning and sees a small hand in front of him.
Curious, he gets out of bed and goes to the nearest window. Almost immediately, Till, a maid who takes care of him, calls him Van and tells him to be careful.
Van replies normally, unaware that he is using language far more advanced than that of a two-year-old.
As he concentrates, he begins to remember details of his new life, his father, and his brothers. However, he knows nothing about the place where he lives.
During breakfast with his father and brothers, he notices that everyone is very serious. Meanwhile, Van is surrounded and doted on by the servants.
When Jalpa, his father, begins to ask his sons about their plans for the day, they all answer with some trepidation. Jalpa is very strict and doesn’t hesitate to remind them that they possess the power of fire, a tradition in their family.
When he asks Van, the boy replies that there are many things he doesn’t know and that he plans to study more about the culture and history of his nation.
Everyone is surprised, and Jalpa laughs with delight, saying that he hopes Van will possess a power comparable to his own and that of his late mother, Mira.
From that moment on, Van is rigorously educated by Esparda for two years and instructed by Dee in swordsmanship thereafter.
After all, at the age of eight, the boy is expected to demonstrate his magical abilities and confirm what Jalpa expects of him.
However, all hope vanishes when Van shows no fire abilities. Jalpa is furious, so much so that he draws his sword, but before he can harm Van, his older brother intervenes.
Instead of killing him, he suggests to his father that he send him to a remote and abandoned village on the border. Van is grateful that his life has been spared, and he is immediately sent to his new home.
