As he was getting ready for his summer vacation, Hibiki opened a door at his school—and in an instant, he found himself in a vast open field.
While he was still trying to make sense of what had just happened, a terrifying rabbit began to chase him; as he fled, he started hearing a voice giving him instructions.
The rabbit—which sported a horn—charged at Hibiki and got its horn stuck in his backpack. Struck by the impact, the boy tumbled onto the rabbit, inadvertently killing it.
Still unsure of his whereabouts, he discovered that he had the ability to view a “Status” screen—much like in a video game. He saw that he had been assigned the “Appraiser” class and that he even had an option to view a map.
Upon doing so, Hibiki discovered the route he needed to take to reach a road. Once there, he believed he was safe—but a monster suddenly appeared behind him, looming menacingly.
Fortunately for him, the elf Emalia happened to be nearby and came to his aid. Seeing how helpless he was, she was astonished that he had managed to make it out of the plains alive—for the plains were, in reality, a single colossal monster.
To Emalia, Hibiki seemed like a mere child, so she decided to look after him—even though, in reality, he was a sixteen-year-old high school student.
Making use of the rabbit that had crashed into his backpack, the two of them cooked and ate it before settling down for the night. Emalia harbored some doubts about Hibiki, but seeing him sleep so soundly and without a care, she decided to believe his incredible story.
The following morning, as they made their way toward the nearest town, Hibiki mentioned to the elf that he possessed a map and the ability to appraise anything he could see. Emalia was taken aback by this revelation—and even went so far as to suggest that it might be a good idea for them to form a team.
